GREYS ANATOMY
Greys Anatomy, a Medical Drama includes an ensemble cast which is made up of surgical interns who have started their journey of residency. It began in 2005 set in Seattle, Washington at a hospital originally called Seattle Grace Mercy hospital and later changed to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. Through out the 19 seasons and counting, we are able to see the growth of the cast which includes interns, residents, and attendings professionally but also personally.
Regarding the competitiveness within the workplace, we were introduced to the different roles and how each character was treated and what they were expected to do. Within this topic, we were able to see how people from different cultures/upbringings work as a team and how this contributes to how they are treated. Everyone wants to be "the Best" and at certain times, the competitiveness was unfair or turned into a game. This created a lot of problems and perspectives about the medical field that aren't necessarily true such as the characters being seen as nonchalant or not empathetic about having someones life in their hands. An example of this is when one of the characters Christina was looking at surgery as a game and wanted to stand in any surgery she could get her hands on in order to be seen by the attendings during her residency.
When comparing the values in Greys Anatomy and the medical field I realized that there were two topics that were very present and valued throughout the show. These include professionalism within relationships and also the competitiveness within the roles that are played in the workplace which caused a lot of conflict.
In Greys Anatomy, the way private relationships are perceived in the hospital creates multiple conflicts and the values of professionalism is forgotten. There have been multiple instances where the line was crossed and their work lives are intertwined with their personal lives which change certain values. An example of this is when one of the characters Izzy chose to let the love she had for one of her male patients blind her and this led her to put not only hers but also her coworkers/friends careers on the line.

Hi Jennifer,
ReplyDeleteGreat job with describing the two main topics. I like how you included that the two topics are professionalism within relationships and the competitiveness. Grays Anatomy to me represents this exactly. You have characters switching loved ones that creates an interesting environment. Then there's the competitiveness that brings out the best and worst of the characters.
I totally agree that we get to see personal and work lives all tangled since the show doesn't only focus on the doctors at work. It also deals with all their love drama and relationships outside of the hospital. The competitiveness is also one of the main things that stood out to me when I watched the show.
ReplyDeleteI think it's great that you focus on the external dynamic that the doctors have with patients since it shows their compassion and optimism for taking care of others and contrasting that with the internal competitiveness of the residents. The competitiveness among doctors is definitely not mentioned as much in other medical shows. I think it is one of the things makes Greys Anatomy as successful as it has been.
