WRIT150- Health and Healing Retrospective

Image
In the beginning of the semester, there were so many parts of writing that I did not understand and have done wrong specifically within argumentative essays. I knew that when picking this specific class, I was going to enjoy the content due to it being about 'Health and Healing' and specifically medical ethics within the field I want to go down and that is exactly what the end resulted in. When it came to collaborating in workshops to brainstorm along with peer reviews I do think it was harder for me in the beginning due to in the past I thought I worked better alone but I found it very helpful being put in these groups and do believe that my papers benefitted from doing so. Being able to see my progress through the creation of this blog from the beginning of the semester to now has allowed me to find a new way to brainstorm all the ideas I have within my head and write them down on paper. I do now believe that this is my learning style for when I am choosing to star...

WP4: Mental Health Within the Black Community

Image
When Finding sources, it did not surprise me as to how many articles and journals there were regarding how Mental Health affects the Black Community differently and the social determinants that play key factors in this reasoning. One source I found during the beginning of my research was a news source called, "Black and African American Communities and Mental Health". This article points out the societal issues and how they truly have affected the Black community and continue to have an impact on how there is a stigma behind Mental Health in our community up until this day. The article also focuses on what some treatment options could be to help this problem.  https://www.mhanational.org/issues/black-and-african-american-communities-and-mental-health

WP4: Mental Health Within The Black Community

Image
After researching on different health disparities within multiple communities and how the socioeconomic factors contribute to these issues, I knew that I wanted to focus on the Black Community specifically regarding mental health. Background information that I have known prior to research includes the stigma behind mental health in the Black community and how it has always been pushed to the side within Black families due to other problems being seen as bigger. Black individuals have been taught to be strong and prepared for how the world sees us and to always keep our heads up but there comes a time when there's only so much one can take before they break. Due to the everyday fears black Americans have to watch out for and a lot of past trauma that they bury deep down, this contributes to the high rates of mental illnesses and keeps our community down as a whole. Information I need to find is specific data that shows how mental illnesses within the back community are higher and w...

Ethical Dilemma- Liver transplant issues regarding Alcoholic liver diseases

After doing deeper research on the duty to warn at-risk family members of Genetic diseases, I found that there are a list of rules that physicians are supposed to follow when they are introduced to this problem with their patient. Due to this, I do not think I had a strong enough opposing viewpoint within this topic to write my research project #3 on it.  Now, I have now chosen to focus on another different ethical dilemma on writing project #3 which is liver transplant issues specifically regarding alcoholic liver disease. Is it a right or wrong for someone who has abused Alcohol to be able to get a liver transplant disease and what does this mean for individuals with liver diseases not created by Alcohol who had no control over them needing a working liver. This is a huge ethical dilemma due to the scarce supply that there is today.  Regarding ethical issues, This creates a conflict when regarding the medical Pillar of Justice because although everyone s...

Ethical Dilemma- Warning family members of At-risk diseases

Image
I have chosen to do my writing project 3 research paper on the duty to warn At risk family members of genetic testing. I have chosen this topic because not only does it interest me but I want to challenge my point of view on it. The ethical dilemma regarding this topic is between the two pillars Autonomy and Beneficence and nonmaleficence. Regarding Autonomy and this topic, doctors have the duty to protect their patients medical records and should not disclose this information unless they have this patients consent. On the other hand, the pillar of Beneficence and n onmaleficence supports warning at- risk patients of genetic disease in order to reduce their risk and gives them the option to test. This creates the physicians responsibilities to be in conflict because in this situation, both pillars are going against each other and leaves the physician in a sticky situation. The brings up the question of whether they abide by their patient and respect their decision or do they abi...

Vaping- post #2

Image
When reviewing the topic on whether a paternalistic approach should be taken when it comes to vaping I believe that this should be the case. From researching the topic on vaping I have learned that vaping is actually harmful and is not something that should be given out to the public. Specifically in teens, vaping has became something very popular and is something that has become a trend. I also noticed that there was a perception of vaping within our generation that would weaken my argument of vaping needing a paternalistic approach. A lot of people believe that because e cigarettes were created in order to stop smoking actual cigarettes, it is a healthy alternative but that is not the case. the difference between vaping and smoking cigarettes is that within smoking cigarettes, tobacco is burning and the tar is harming your lungs. Within vaping, it is actually a liquid that is burning which makes people believe that it is a more healthy way. This...

Vaping In Teens

Image
The topic that I chose to do research on for Writing Project 2 was Vaping in Teens. This is a topic that I feel is very important especially since it is very popular within our generation. It has been said that the amount of vaping in teens has increased and this is causing the problem to get worse. We have heard stories time and time again from teens who went through horrible health reactions due to vaping. From starting my research, I learned that for one, the vaping in teens is considered an epidemic and for two there are actions being done by the FDA to help lower the population of teens vaping. I do believe that in this case, a paternalistic approach should be taken due to many of the reasons why vaping is being done. A lot of the time I've seen my peers feel like vaping is cool not knowing how much harm they are doing to their body. A lot of us do not know right from wrong so I feel like the government interfering in this case is a good thing and a step in the right directi...
