WP4: Mental Health Within The Black Community

After researching on different health disparities within multiple communities and how the socioeconomic factors contribute to these issues, I knew that I wanted to focus on the Black Community specifically regarding mental health. Background information that I have known prior to research includes the stigma behind mental health in the Black community and how it has always been pushed to the side within Black families due to other problems being seen as bigger. Black individuals have been taught to be strong and prepared for how the world sees us and to always keep our heads up but there comes a time when there's only so much one can take before they break. Due to the everyday fears black Americans have to watch out for and a lot of past trauma that they bury deep down, this contributes to the high rates of mental illnesses and keeps our community down as a whole. Information I need to find is specific data that shows how mental illnesses within the back community are higher and what specific social determinants have contributed to this. One part regarding my paper that I have not figured out is whether I should focus on the Black Community as a whole or should I focus on just women or just men?

Addressing Mental Health in the Black Community - Future of Personal Health

  1. I love that you are writing about mental health! I think it has really been overlooked in the past and that is why many communities have struggled to adopt supportive attitudes towards people might just need someone to be there for them.

  2. I like how you also thought about narrowing your field of study. Instead of narrowing by gender, I did mine by geographic location. By focusing on Asian American access to healthcare specifically in California, I was able to gain more insight into the problems that communities face in areas I am more familiar with (LA and the Bay Area).

  3. Mental health is a great topic to discuss about as it has been affecting this generation towards a lot of people. And the group you chose on African-Americans, can be addressed as well as they have been a lot of people in minority groups that have faced this stigma and went through a lot.

  4. I like how you talked about the socioeconomic factors that contribute to the issue. I found your blog post very focused as well. It took me some time to narrow my topic. You have a great topic to discuss and I look forward to reading more.
