Ethical Dilemma- Liver transplant issues regarding Alcoholic liver diseases
After doing deeper research on the duty to warn at-risk family members of Genetic diseases, I found that there are a list of rules that physicians are supposed to follow when they are introduced to this problem with their patient. Due to this, I do not think I had a strong enough opposing viewpoint within this topic to write my research project #3 on it.
Now, I have now chosen to focus on another different ethical dilemma on writing project #3 which is liver transplant issues specifically regarding alcoholic liver disease. Is it a right or wrong for someone who has abused Alcohol to be able to get a liver transplant disease and what does this mean for individuals with liver diseases not created by Alcohol who had no control over them needing a working liver. This is a huge ethical dilemma due to the scarce supply that there is today.
Regarding ethical issues, This creates a conflict when regarding the medical Pillar of Justice because although everyone should be treated equally, whether a liver transplant is needed creates conflict because of the scarce in supply.
My stance on this ethical dilemma is that individuals who created this need for a liver transplant due to abusing alcohol should not be able to receive a liver transplant before someone who did not any control over why they need a liver transplant.
I think one point to consider is that maybe the person has shown signs of stopping their abuse of alcohol. If they no longer consume alcohol, shouldn't they be given a second chance through a transplant of a new liver?
ReplyDeleteThis topic closely relates to my Writing Project One, where I wrote about ethics in a movie about an organ transplant committee. It would be interesting to see if you explored how the order of patients on the transplant lists are currently determined.
ReplyDeleteI too had to change my WP3 topic. Your new topic sounds very interesting. When you discuss the Pillar of Justice, you could maybe include the laws/policies around the issue.
